Eight North State contractors were cited last week after an undercover operation revealed they were advertising their services on Craigslist, despite the fact that they were unlicensed.
The eight contractors were all caught during an undercover sting operation conducted last Thursday in Corning. Investigators posed as homeowners and called the suspects to bid on home improvement projects that included the installation of new kitchen floor tile, granite countertop, a stone fire pit, landscaping, tree removal, interior and exterior painting, and concrete work.
Bids totaled as much as $16,000 for a new driveway, but any home improvement job that is more than $500 in combined labor and materials requires that the contractor have a state-issued contactors license.
The contractors were cited for a misdemeanor charge of contracting without a license and six of them face an additional misdemeanor charge of illegal advertising.
The suspects charged were Arthur Duane Scharton with A&D Masonry in Redding, Robert Dean Donery, II of Redding, Steven E. Deforrest, Jr. of Redding, Rock Wayne Leonard with Rocky's Home Maintenance in Oroville, Daniel Scott Petitclere of Chico, Michael Murphy of Redding, and Frank Polo of Chico.
