A federal grand jury has charged six people for their suspected involvement in a drug ring that was uncovered when one of the suspects left 45 pounds of cocaine in a rental car.
A two-count indictment was returned Thursday against Sonia Kim, Julius Caubat, Kamaljit Billen, Gurdeep Singh, June Chungil, and Justin Byun, charging them with conspiracy to distribute over five kilograms of cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Law enforcement began an investigation when a rental car company reported that 20 kilograms of cocaine was found in the back of a rental car returned by Kim on December 8.
About two weeks later authorities learned Kim was at a hotel in Yuba City. Outside the hotel Kim, Byun, Chungil and Caubat were seen giving 60 kilograms of cocaine to Billen and Singh. All six suspects were arrested on the scene.
If convicted each defendant faces life in prison and a $10 million fine.
