KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - With just months to go before U.S. combat troops leave Afghanistan, five American troops have died in one of the worst friendly-fire incidents involving U.S. and coalition forces since the start of the war there.

Officials say the five were killed yesterday by an apparent coalition airstrike in southern Afghanistan. A senior police official in the province says the soldiers were in a joint operation with Afghan forces when they came under attack from the Taliban and called in air support.

In 2002, four Canadian soldiers were killed when an American F-16 jet fighter dropped a bomb on a group near a night firing exercise in southern Kandahar.
