As we approach the 4th of July weekend local authorities would like to remind everyone about fireworks laws in the north state.

In Shasta County fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks, are illegal, including in the City of Redding.

In Butte County any possession of fireworks, even those designated as "safe and sane," within the unincorporated portions of Butte County is illegal and strictly prohibited.

Despite the Butte County ban, the cities of Oroville and Gridley allow for the sales of "safe and sane" fireworks within their city limits.

With the severe drought conditions and significant fire threats facing California, local law enforcement will be prepared to enforce the firework bans.

Possessing, transporting or igniting any fireworks is a misdemeanor. Any person causing a fire using fireworks can also be held liable for damages and the cost of suppressing the fire.

In Butte County lighting or possessing fireworks outside of Oroville or Gridley could result in fines upwards of a $1000 and six months in county jail.
