4 counties declare local emergencies, Butte County considering proclamation

Four Northern California counties, including Tehama County, have declared local emergencies following rains that brought flooding, mudslides and other damages.

KNTV reports State Office of Emergency Services Spokeswoman Lilly Wyatt says Tehama, Sonoma, Marin and Lake counties have proclaimed "local emergencies" following the storms last week.

Only the governor can proclaim a state of emergency.

The agency reports Monterey and San Mateo counties are also preparing to make the proclamation, and Butte County is considering, also.

The proclamations jumpstart the formal request for state and federal financial aid if the need arises. Sonoma County has requested $17 million, and Marin County has asked for $1 million. The other two counties have not yet specified a dollar amount as crews are still assessing the damage. Northern California is expected to remain relatively dry over the next week.
