State of Jefferson supporters from Glenn, Tehama, and Yuba counties presented their "declarations of separation" in Sacramento on Thursday.
The three counties submitted petitions for the right to form the State of Jefferson from their county governments to the secretaries of the State Assembly and Senate on Thursday.
Supporters rallied outside the Capitol, where Yuba City Assemblyman James Gallagher declared the movement next needs to get Shasta and Placer Counties on board. Supporters say the U.S. Constitution allows a region to petition the government for secession and if lawmakers ignore the petition, Jefferson proponents will have grounds to sue.
Glenn, Tehama and Yuba counties join Modoc and Siskiyou counties, who presented their separation declarations last August. Supporters plan to return with a declaration from Sutter County next month.
After holding an open forum in June of last year, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors followed in the steps of the Butte sups and voted to reject the movement.
