TWISP, Wash. (AP) - The White House says President Barack Obama has been apprised of the deaths of three firefighters in Washington state.
Obama has directed the administration to stay in touch with state and local officials and to provide federal assistance as necessary.
The three were killed by a wildfire near the town of Twisp. Several others were injured, one of them critically.
Nearly 29,000 firefighters are battling some 100 large blazes across the West, including in Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington and California.
