NORWALK, Calif. (AP) - Three people have pleaded not guilty to charges in the shooting death of a Downey police officer.

City News Service reports 18-year-old Steven Knott and 21-year-old Jeremy Anthony Alvarez have been charged with capital murder and attempted second-degree robbery in the killing of Officer Ricardo "Ricky" Galvez.

Seventeen-year-old Abel Diaz is also facing one count each of murder and attempted robbery.

Prosecutors will decide later whether to pursue the death penalty against Knott and Alvarez. Diaz cannot be sentenced to death because of his age but faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.

Galvez was shot as he sat in his car near the suburban Downey Police Department in what authorities believe was a robbery attempt. He was an ex-Marine who survived combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
