Fire crews are on the scene of large gas tank malfunction at Kinder Morgan in Chico.

One of Kinder's gas tanks malfunctioned around 8 a.m. Friday. Chico Fire crews along with a Cal Fire are team are monitoring the fuel vapor coming out of a 260,000 gallon tank of gasoline.

Fire officials on scene say there is a potential for fire if there's an ignition source nearby, and as the weather warms up the fire danger increases.

Crews say they could be on scene for as many as 15 hours, as they work to transfer fuel from the malfunctioning tank into another tank.

The fire department has not ordered any evacuations, but officials are developing an evacuation order in the event it is needed.
