26 defendants charged, 60,000 marijuana plants seized after yearlong operation

The results of a yearlong, multi-agency law enforcement operation that targeted marijuana cultivators and distributors in Shasta and Trinity Counties were announced today.

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, and Trinity County Sheriff Bruce Haney along with U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner announced that 26 defendants have been charged and nearly 60,000 marijuana plants were seized as a result of “Operation Safe Counties”.

The operation specifically targeted individuals and groups in Shasta and Trinity Counties involved in the cultivation of marijuana on public lands and private property and those distributing their product throughout California and the United States.

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko stated: “The focus of law enforcement’s efforts are criminal marijuana operations. The illegal production marijuana has significantly expanded in recent years. Illegal marijuana operations continue to be an imminent threat to our environment, our community, and to our citizens. A collaborative effort of federal, state, and local agencies is a force multiplier against not only against these operations, but against the environmental damage on public and private lands.”

Under the umbrella of “Operation Safe Counties,” nearly three dozen separate investigations were undertaken by a number of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
