Chico's largest heritage tree is now split in two.
The 250 year-old Valley Oak, located on Eaton Road and Cohasset is believed to have split sometime Wednesday. The oak is 78-inches in diameter and grows on the bank of Sycamore Creek.
Volunteers have cared for the tree over the years, by installing large logs around the outside of the drip line, to keep vehicles out from under the canopy. They also prune and cable the tree.
North Valley Tree Service has voluntarily maintained this tree, enrolled in the city of Chico's heritage tree program.
