2 Fraternities Remain on Suspension

Two fraternities are still working to earn reinstatement to the Chico State campus.
Phi Beta Sigma and Kappa Sigma are still on suspension following November’s suspension of the entire Greek system.
Most fraternities and sororities were reinstated at the beginning of the spring semester, but Kappa Sigma's suspension was extended because of an unsanctioned social event.
Phi Beta Sigma is working to get back in good standing because of a hazing incident at the universities parking structure last year.
"For reasons that are not completely clear were trying to motivate them or give them a little grief. It's not quite sure the motivation, but they should not have touched the recruits. People witnessed this and it is clearly against the hazing law," Chico State spokesperson Joe Wills said.

The president of Phi Beta Sigma did not return our phone calls this afternoon, but told the school newspaper, The Orion that no one was hurt or embarrassed during the gathering.
He acknowledged the event likely violated hazing rules because new recruits were at the event.
The university has also cleared the Sigma Pi fraternity of any wrongdoing or violations in connection with the alcohol poisoning death of 21-year-old Mason Sumnicht.
