Two separate big rig crashes slowed traffic on Interstate 5 near Fawndale Road, north of Redding Monday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a big traveling southbound lost control and went off the road into a ditch. The truck was carrying metal which flew into the northbound lanes. The driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

A second big rig jackknifed in the northbound lanes just minutes after when the driver attempted to avoid the debris.

As of 2 p.m. southbound traffic is flowing normally, but northbound lanes remained backed up with traffic moving through on the shoulder.

CHP officials say the cause of the crash appears to be weather related.
