PG&E has begun the first phase of a $2.3 million project in a historic Red Bluff neighborhood.
"This pipeline replacement project will improve system safety and integrity, of natural gas service in this historic area of Red Bluff," said Erik Kurtz, gas superintendent or PG&E's North Valley and Sierra divisions.
The pipeline upgrades are along portions of Main, Grant, Lincoln, Crittenden, Chipman, Breckenridge, Douglas, Jackson, Madison, Jefferson, Cedar and Washington streets.
Traffic will be minimally affected, but crews will have to vent natural gas throughout the project and the smell of gas will be noticeable to nearby homes and businesses.
Stage 1 of the project should be completed by October and the other phases will begin in 2015.
