LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police say a 101-year-old man has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver who was later arrested.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1r1rv68) the fatal accident happened about 6 a.m. Wednesday as Jose Noriega was crossing a Boyle Heights street in a marked crosswalk.

Noriega was hit by a 1997 Chevy Astro van traveling north. He was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

The van's driver fled the scene. Detective Alex Padilla says the driver was followed by witnesses who then blocked his path and detained him until officers arrived.

Forty-one-year-old Ricardo Avalos of Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and booked on $50,000 bail.
