A man was killed Friday morning when his pickup was struck by an Amtrak train in Sutter County.

The train slammed into the side of the pickup around 8:45 a.m. near Keys and Natomas Roads. The driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Nobody on the train was injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.

There were a couple hundred passengers on board the train, which was traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles and had most recently stopped in Chico.

CHP investigators say the two Amtrak engineers tried to get the drivers attention before the crash by blowing the train’s whistles and horns.
