The Yuba City Fire Department has announced they will be hiring nine new firefighters, thanks to a $1.5 million grant.

Yuba City was recently awarded $1,578,600 under the SAFER Grant Program. The money will fund will provide for the hiring of nine limited term firefighters. Firefighters hired under the SAFER Grant program will be employed for a two year term with the host fire agency.

Under the SAFER Grant, there is no financial match required of the local agency and therefore no additional costs to the Citizens of Yuba City.

Fire Chief Pete Daley says he is thrilled that the department was successful in securing the SAFER grant funding and is looking to fast-track the hiring of nine limited term firefighters. He expressed his appreciation to the department’s firefighters for their extra efforts caused by the reduced staffing.

Daley anticipates the new firefighters will start their duties sometime before the end of the year.
