Just before 8 a.m. this morning, 47-year-old Tania Fox of Yuba City was traveling west on SR-20 approaching Plantz Road in her Dodge Neon at approximately 55mph. At the same time, 47-year-old Robert Lugo, also of Yuba City, was traveling with a 14-year-old minor east on SR-20 also approaching Plantz Road in a Ford Crown Victoria at roughly the same speed. For reasons yet to be determined by CHP, Fox allowed her vehicle to drift from the roadway.
In an effort to re-correct, Fox over steered her vehicle into oncoming traffic towards Lugo. Although Lugo attempted to evade Fox and apply his brakes, he was unable to avoid the collision. The front side of Lugo’s car broadsided Fox’s car as it entered the eastbound lane. Fox’s car continued to travel down the embankment on the south side of SR-20 and eventually came to a rest on its wheels facing east. Lugo’s car stopped in the eastbound lane facing south.
Life saving measures were attempted on Fox, but unfortunately proved unsuccessful. Both Lugo and the minor in his vehicle were transported to a local hospital, where Lugo suffered an abrasion to his right hand, the minor only complained of neck and back pain.
The CHP collision report indicated alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor and all parties were wearing their seatbelts. The accident remains under investigation.
