In Northern Section high school girls basketball, the Mercy Warriors are off to a great start.

Senior Jessica Curl is the undeniable leader for Mercy, and at 6-foot-3, she's a presence that more times than not, can't be stopped.

"She's got pretty good footwork, she's got a great shot, she works hard, she's getting double-teamed and triple-teamed and she's still scoring 22, 24, 26. We haven't found anybody that can stop her," said Mercy girls basketball coach Steve Shellaberger.

"I put a lot of pressure on myself, I do try and help as much as I can and pull weight and more," said Curl.

Lately that hasn't been a problem for Mercy High's Jessica Curl.

She thrives on pressure and the results speak for themselves.

Curl averages 22 points and 18 rebounds per game for a 12-3 Warriors squad. This past week, she surpassed career totals of 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

"What she does best is go and get the basketball on the offensive and defensive end," said Shellaberger.

"I know that I need to get better every time I hit the floor, so that's what really motivates me," said Curl.

Her production and work ethic haven't gone unnoticed.

Earlier this year, Curl accepted a full-ride scholarship to William Jessup, a school where where she'll have the chance to play both basketball and volleyball.

"It's going to get me out of my comfort zone to learn and meet new people and play at a higher level that I've been playing at my four years of high school," said Curl.

The small-town girl from Red Bluff is used to adapting, as balancing basketball and books is something she's had to get used to, and she's done it well, sporting a 3.92 GPA. But Curl says she can't do it without the support of her teachers.

"Everybody here is so helpful and they just want you to succeed and I think that's what really has helped me. It's just really been awesome here," said Curl.

With how successful she's already been up to this point, there's no reason to think the future will be any different.
