According to the Butte County District Attorney's Office, Jose Luis Flores, 34, of Chico was charged in connection with the death of his mother’s dog, a two-year miniature dachshund named “Shrek”. Flores had allegedly had an argument with his elderly mother and his sister. Later that day, they discovered Shrek hanging by his neck from a shrub.
Flores is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Superior Court on September 24, 2013. He remains in custody in Butte County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.
Simonette Yvonne Ayala-Warr, 55, of Paradise was charged for the stabbing death of her poodle-mix dog named “Sasha.”  Ayala-Warr was also found with a self-inflicted stab wound to her upper chest.
Ayala-Warr’s case was continued to October 1, 2013 to evaluate Ayala-Warr’s mental health. She remains in custody on $40,000 bail due to the use of a knife.
