Diversity Days kicked-off on the Butte College Campus Monday with a visit from a critically-acclaimed author.
Matt de la Pena has written several novels for young adults featuring characters of mixed-race, including "Ball Don't Lie" and "Mexican White Boy".
He lectured before a large audience at Butte College about reading and writing "on the wrong side of the tracks."
De la Pena told Action News, "I was the first in my family to go to college. I love to motivate students to stay on the track of education because you never know where it will lead. Sometimes you get the sense it's a lonely path ... unattainable other times."
Diversity Days will feature more than 30 workshops, events, speakers and films on the Butte College Main Campus through April 11th.
College Officials say it's an annual opportunity for the campus and community to learn more about diversity while expressing and exchanging ideas. ###
