The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department stated another arrest has been made in its on-going investigation into the theft of gold and other artifacts valued at over $1.2 million in January 2012.
Today 51-year-old Scott Wayne Bailey was arrested on the outstanding arrest warrant by law enforcement officials in San Pablo, Calif. Bailey is expected to be transferred to the Siskiyou County Jail where he will be held for the same burglary, theft, and conspiracy charges faced by three other men in the infamous courthouse heist earlier last year.
“We are relieved that Mr. Bailey is now in custody and will soon be transferred to the Siskiyou County Jail,” said Siskyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey. “With both primary suspects in custody, we are optimistic that these recent developments will help us bring this major crime to a successful conclusion.”
During the early morning hours of January 31, 2012, $1,257,500 in gold, jewelry and artifacts were taken from the court house lobby in the county seat of Yreka. Bailey and 49-year-old David Dean Johnson of El Cerrito were eventually identified as key suspects in the case. The investigation also revealed at least some of the gold proceeds may have been used to purchase various high-value items.
“This arrest is the fruit of thorough investigation and diligent pursuit of the suspects,” said District Attorney Kirk Andrus. “This is excellent timing for Bailey’s arrest as we will seek to prosecute all defendants jointly in order not to expend county resources unnecessarily.
In March of this year, the Siskiyou County District Attorney’s office charged Johnson and Bailey with burglarizing the county courthouse. On April 1, Johnson turned himself in to a SCSO detective. Johnson faces an enhancement of five previous felony convictions, according to the Sheriff’s press release.
Johnson remains in custody in the Siskiyou County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
A $50,000.00 reward is still being offered for the identification, arrest and conviction of the suspects involved in the court house gold theft case. The investigation into the Siskiyou County Courthouse burglary and theft is on-going and anyone with further information is urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit at (530) 842-8354, or, call the SCSO 24-hour dispatch number of (530) 841-2900.
