The Hamilton High School girls basketball team has won seven in a row. One of three sophomores leading the way is Morgan Avrit, who also leads the Braves sophomore class in academics. And as Action News Now's Ross Field reports, this Subway Scholar Athlete is latest in a long line of Braves to leave their mark.
Mark Priano has seen his fair share of great players come through Hamilton High during his nine years as head coach.
"Aubrey Bekendam., Audra jones, Itzel Duran and Sonia Leal. They did just did the right things," said Priano.
Now, you can add a sophomore to that special group.
"She's probably already on my list!" Priano said.
And she is Morgan Avrit.
"It's my favorite sport. I've been playing since first grade," said Avrit.
"You can see the progression of a player getting stronger, getting more confident, getting more vocal with her teammates and starting to add pieces to her repetoire of basketball abilities each day," adds Priano.
Avrit averages 13.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
But, it's not about her, it's about the team. The Braves are 14-3.
"I think we really click together and just enjoy being around each other and it just makes it a fun season, especially when we win," said Avrit.
And Morgan is more than a good player.
"Teammate wise, that's another piece, she's a really good teammate," said Priano.
And she's really good at softball, volleyball and school too.
Avrit carries a 4.0 GPA and she says learning in the classroom translates to getting better on the court.
"Paying attention in class helps you focus on the court and keeps you really mentally strong throughout the game,," said Avrit.
"There's a couple things, it's student-athlete, not athlete-student, so the grades are important, the studies are important. That's exciting to watch," said Priano.
Avrit is thinking, growing and getter better each day. It's scary to think about what she'll be like as a senior.
Hamilton High's Morgan Avrit is our Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week.
