A Paradise mechanic was almost killed in a head-on crash on the Skyway near Paradise Friday morning, exactly where 19-year-old Brianna Cassidy died in a head-on crash in 2014.

Jim Hovey was driving from Chico to Paradise on the Skyway when he said a yellow Volkswagon Beetle appeared to be overcorrecting, spun around and then went into the median into the grass, right on Hovey's side of the road.

Hovey was in the slow lane and had to move off to the right to avoid having her hit his car.

The mechanic was driving a full-sized Dodge truck with a big diesel engine. The mechanic says this could have ended badly.
Mary and Rod Cassidy said the Skyway is not even up to safety standard. While the county has agreed to cover the cost of the guardrails, the Cassidy family would have to raise the $25,000 for an engineer.

"It could've been another fatality and that's what we are trying to prevent. If rails had gone up, we wouldn't have lost our daughter. And if something isn't done, the same thing could happen again," said Rod Cassidy.

Mary Cassidy said she and her husband shouldn't have to pay for the engineer. According to the couple, the road is a public safety hazard.
