(WFIE/NBC News) Security, dashboard and body camera footage shows a terrifying shooting spree that ended when an Evansville, Indiana policeman shot a gunman targeting law enforcement officers.

The shooting spree took place on May 11. Investigators say it began when 51-year-old Barry Freeman shot and killed 56-year-old Jeffrey Kempf, then began firing at nearby homes. Police said it appears Kempf was randomly targeted by Freeman.

When police arrived, Freeman continued shooting, firing dozens of rounds at officers and their patrol cars as he roamed the streets of the neighborhood.

An officer eventually returned fire, striking Freeman twice in the chest. He died two days later.

Remarkably, no officers were hurt, but Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin said the reality of what could have happened is hitting home with his force, adding the patrol car riddled with bullet holes is the scariest and most eye-opening thing he has ever seen.
