A traffic alert this Tuesday morning on Highway 70 near the Cresta Powerhouse in Butte County. Both the east and west bound lanes have been shut down for hours after a driver of a semi-truck became wedged along the cliff face.

Since 1 a.m. Tuesday morning crews have been working to remove the big rig from highway 70 after the driver fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into the eastbound lanes.

He and his female passenger have been transported to the hospital with moderate to severe injuries.

The semi-truck struck the cliff face and now part of the trailer went down the embankment and the rest of the truck is blocking both lanes.

Traffic is building up in both lanes with several vehicles.

The CHP says weather was not a factor, it was only that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Look for more updates as we look to see when the highway will re-open.
