This week's Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week has been a leader in every sense of the word for the Chico high softball team, both on the field and off it.

In school and sports, Chico high's Brooke Barney sets an example for others to follow.

"I always try my best and I'm really interested in my future so I know that preparing as early as I can will help me succeed," says Barney

Barney maintains a 4.0 GPA and her favorite subject is Chemistry.

"I find it really interesting and it's kind of both science and Math, which I really like so it's kind of a happy medium," says Barney

While she is an obvious leader in the classroom, this junior is also advanced on the softball diamond, having played varsity since her sophomore year.

This season, she's hitting .390 and playing a solid centerfield for a Chico squad that's eyeing a section title.

"My team has worked really hard this whole season adn we're a great talented group of girls and I have a lot of faith in us. I've worked really hard this year with my coaches and my dad and it's exciting to see the results come out," said Barney.

"She gets up to the plate and she's ready to go, she's dialed in and it shows. She's tremendous, our top hitter this year," says Chico softball coach Randi Salado.

Softball is just the tip of the iceberg. Barney says she likes to stay busy and productive in all facets of life.

"I'm in the National Charity League, that's a mother-daughter organization where you do charity work. I always like to be on the move it keeps you busy, it's fun to always be doing stuff and giving back to your community," says Barney.

With that kind of outlook and focus, it's no surprise that the future for Barney is shaping up to be full of success.

"She's an amazing young lady and just with her work ethic and the characteristics that I see in her already as a junior in high school, she's going to go far," says Salado.
