Our Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week, Justin Allen has the Foothill baseball team eyeing a second straight section title and the c|Cougars infielder is ready for any challenge thrown his way.
justin allen can describe his life in 4 simple ways, school, baseball, homework and sleep.
"That's about it, everyone always asks me, 'hey what's new with your life?'" Allen said. "I always say, school and baseball, just taking care of it."
Most of his time on the baseball field isn't even spent in games, but in practice.
"You know he's a workaholic. He's one of those that eats, sleeps and drinks baseball. Anytime he can get on the field or get someone to throw him batting practice he's out working on it," said Foothill baseball coach Todd Buck.
The results speak for themselves. Allen is hitting .322 on the season, with 27 runs scored and 26 RBI, but perhaps where he's most valuable to the Cougars is on defense. This slick fielding shortstop scoops up everything hit his way and his leadership is invaluable for the 26-4 squad.
"When he first came up his sophomore year he was quiet and just went out and did his job and as the years have gone he's become more of a on the field quarterback, you know in the middle directing traffic making sure everyone gets in the right spot," says Buck.
Allen's production on the diamond has helped him earn a scholarship to play for St. Mary's next year.
"I'm really excited that they have a good baseball and I think I'm a really good fit. Also their academics are superb."
A man of few words, Allen lets his hardwork and abilities do the talking, including in the classroom where he carries a 3.5 GPA.
"It's always school and then sports, always," said Allen.
