LA JOLLA – It appears the Chico State men's cross country team is more than ready to defend its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title and shoot for its 12th straight conference crown. In their final tune-up before the CCAA meet, the Wildcats literally ran away with the UC San Diego-hosted Triton Classic Saturday, taking top team honors while boasting the top six finishers and placing 14 runners in the top 20.
The Chico State men, ranked No. 5 in the nation and first in the West Region, captured the Triton Classic's team title in the 8-kilometer event, totaling just 15 points and easily outdistancing second place UC San Diego.
The big story, though, was Wildcat runner Alfonso Cisneros. The senior placed first, finishing with a course-record time of 25:40.8. Right on his heels were teammates Johnny Sanchez and Isaac Chavez, who finished second and third, respectively, with times of 25:40.9.
The next three finishers were also wearing Chico State colors. Aaron Thomas came in fourth, clocking in at 25:52.2; Phil Graber placed fifth with a time of 25:56.9, and Alex McGuan finished sixth at 26:01.08.
The 'Cats boasted two more runners in the top 10 Saturday. Dayne Gradone placed eighth with a time of 26:12.0, while Geoff Hull finished ninth at 26:12.1.
Wildcats continued to spill over the finish line, with six posting top 20 finishes and all 16 runners finishing in the top 35:
-- Geoff Bogan (11th place), 26:22.7
-- Rogan Meza (13th place), 26:28.0
-- Aaron Mora (14th place), 26:32.7
-- Alan Cuevas (16th place), 26:40.0
-- Andrew Cobourn (18th place), 26:40.4
-- Germay Tesfai (19th place), 26:42.9
-- Ryan Rampoldi (27th place), 27:02.7
-- Tommy McGuan (33rd place), 27:16.7
The Chico State men return to action Saturday, Oct. 26, hosting the CCAA Cross Country Championships at Bidwell Park's Hooker Oak complex.
