A recipient of a Redding Rotary scholarship was arrested June 18 for attempting to cash a fraudulent copy of his scholarship check, according to the Redding Police Department.
On June 6, the Department was contacted by the Redding Rotary notifying them of a fraudulent check transaction. According to the Department’s release, Redding Rotary notified them an unknown suspect was cashing fraudulent checks in the organization’s name.
The investigation revealed Redding Rotary has issued a scholarship check to 21-year-old Dillon Rhys Haner of Redding, and that Haner used the check to print an additional fraudulent check. The fraudulent check was deposited at an ATM with the transaction captured on video surveillance. Investigators identified 20 year-old Kandice Elizabeth Prather, of Redding as the suspect who deposited the bad check. Prather was later identified as the girlfriend of Haner.
On June 18, Haner and Prather were contacted by investigators on the 1900 block of West Street in Redding. According to the release, both Haner and Prather admitted to fraudulent transaction and were arrested. Haner was searched and heroin was located on his person. Both individuals were booked into the Shasta County jail.
