EUREKA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a popular Eureka priest died at the St. Bernard Church rectory, and detectives have launched a murder investigation.

Eureka Mayor Frank Jager tells the Eureka Times-Standard (http://bit.ly/KldJOc ) that the body of Rev. Eric Freed was found in the building Wednesday after he failed to show up for morning mass.

Eureka police Chief Andrew Mills says the department is conducting a murder investigation at the church, but would not confirm the identity of the victim.

Mills says the murder occurred sometime between Tuesday evening when parishioners left evening services and Wednesday morning.

Parishioner Winette Treder tells the paper that after Freed failed to show up Wednesday morning, a deacon went to look for him and found his body.

Freed also taught religious studies at Humboldt State University.
