Shaina Appleyard, 18 of Oroville, was sentenced today to six years and eight months in prison for a DUI crash that easily could have proved deadly.
On the afternoon of February 24, Appleyard drove down Montgomery Street in Oroville at speeds in excess of 60 mph when she sped through a stop sign, hit a car head-on driven by a pregnant woman with a 4-year-old child in the back seat, then slammed into two teenagers seated on a bench and finally into a tree. One of the teens was thrown 25 feet into a plate glass window and the other was nearly crushed by the car’s tires. The pregnant woman subsequently had to have a C-Section surgery two months prior to her scheduled birth. The mother, her 4-year-old child, and her baby are still recovering from their injuries. The teenagers also sustained injuries but have since recovered.
It was also found Appleyard had been drinking and huffing keyboard cleaning fumes before the accident. Appleyard faced up to 15 years in prison, but Judge Steven Howell handed down a shorter sentence stating he believed Appleyard was remorseful for her actions.
