Apple is banking on long lines of customers for the debut of the iPhone 5S and 5C.
The new models were launched in Tokyo Thursday to a waiting crowd of about 800 people armed with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs memorabilia.
The company sold a record five million smartphones during last year's iPhone debut.
Apple store outlets open their doors at eight a.m., with the online store offering the new phones just after noon.
