A man is dead after being struck by a Union Pacific Railroad train. It happened around 11:20 p.m. Thursday night just north of Big Chico Creek. The train was stopped just south of West Sacramento Avenue, blocking the railroad crossings between W. 5th street and W. 1st street for several hours. Chico Police along with the Chico Fire Department, Enloe medics and University Police, all conducted a search for the victim. He was found dead underneath one of the train cars. According to personnel on the train, the victim was standing near the tracks and jumped into the path of the moving train. It is not known if he was trying to cross the tracks ahead of the train or was trying to commit suicide. The victim's identity has not been determined at this time.
