The Mt. Shasta Ski Park is eerily quiet for a day in December, not much snow on the ground, and not a single person on the slopes.

Jim Mullins has worked at the park for seven seasons, and says these low snow levels aren't unprecedented.

"Two years ago, we didn't open until the 20th of January, looking about a similar pattern, hopefully sooner this time thought," Mullins said.

Unfortunately, skiers aren't the only ones who are being affected.

"As far as the economic impact happens here in the Shasta area, when we don't have the snow then the hotel, motels aren't filled up, the restaurants aren't serving as many meals as they normally would," Mullins said.

He says that as soon as the temperatures drop, the 300 seasonal employees at the park will be ready to work.
The annual New Year's Eve party was cancelled this year due to fire concerns, but the fireworks will be moved to a later date in the season.
