Hundreds gathered to honor a fallen Chico State University nursing student Saturday.

The Kristina Chesterman Memorial Bicycle Safety & Driving and Driving Awareness Event was held at the city plaza.

Chesterman was killed by a drunk driver while riding her bike at night on Highway 32 in September.

On Saturday, dozens of businesses donated their time and profits for a scholarship in her memory.

Event organizers say they hope this event inspires everyone to be more cautious on the road.

“I thinks its 50/50 drivers and bicyclists; everyone needs to pay a lot more attention,” said Janine Rood, Chico Velo executive director. “No more texting while you’re driving.  No drinking while you driving or riding a bike.”

Chico Velo is hosting the "Light Up Chico Program" where they give out free bike lights to those who cannot afford them.
