Deals, discounts and bargain busters.

The holiday shopping season is starting a bit earlier this year.

Many stores are now opening on Thanksgiving Day; and that’s a first for the Chico Mall.

According to the National Retail Federation, an estimated 33 million shoppers will be out on Thanksgiving.

While that may mean steep savings for shoppers and big bucks for businesses, a local therapist says it’s also a distraction for dealing with emotions.

“Even when you’re shopping, yes you’re together maybe with someone else, but it’s a different kind of communication,” said Nori Monroe, a Chico-based marriage and family therapist. “It takes away from the more one-on-one communication because there’s so much going on and then there’s all that stuff.’”

The Chico Mall officially opens at midnight Friday. Stores opening on Thanksgiving Day have chosen to do so independently.
