The Department of Justice announced yesterday a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Sean Erin Karjala, a 42-year-old Redding resident, with production of child porn.
According to the grand Jury, Karjala produced visual depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit acts between February 8 and 9 of this year. The case is the product of the FBI and the Tehama County District Attorney’s office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Reardon will be prosecuting the case.
On April 28, 2013, Karjala was stopped by a California Highway Patrol Officer in Trinity County near Douglas City. During that stop, Karjala attacked the CHP officer and was shot four times. He is currently hospitalized and in protective custody.
If convicted, Karjala faces a statutory penalty of 15 to 30 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a lifetime period of supervised release. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
