A truck driver is dead after his big rig hit a rock and went up in flames.
The accident happened on Highway 70 near Belden at around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. That is when officers say the big rig ran into a huge rock. The impact sent the driver crashing into a rock wall on the shoulder of the highway. His trailer jackknifed, rupturing a fuel tank and burst into flames. The driver died on scene.
California Highway Patrol and CalTrans shut down a big section of Highway 70 for hours. The closure stretched from Concow to the Greenville Why.
Officers on scene said this area is known for its dangerous driving conditions; and the upcoming winter weather makes for even more challenging obstacles.
“The roads are dark and the rocks are dark,” said CHP Officer Reese McAllister. “Drive carefully and watch out for anything like rocks or debris that may fall on the roadway.”
Officers haven’t released too much information on the driver other than he is a 48-year-old man who appeared to be hauling produce.
