November is Lung Cancer Awareness month, and Enloe Regional Cancer Center is hosting a FREE educational event Thursday, November 21st, at the Enloe Conference Center.
Rebecca Senoglu is Cancer Support Program Coordinator, and says that Butte County tobacco usage by adults is 19%. That is 5% higher than the state average and the highest percentage for any county in the state.
She also says that the U.S. task force that defines guidelines for cancer screening , has finally determined that a low dose CT lung screening exam is recommended for people with a history of heavy smoking. This means that insurance is starting to pay for it. And that can save lives for people who have a history of past or present heavy smoking.
Thursday's event will feature three different experts talking about lung cancer screening and treatment. Dr. Matt Gubens is a lung cancer specialist from UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Ata Alijani is a Radiologist at North State Radiology in Chico and Dr Erik Stickney is a Radiation Oncologist at Enloe Regional Cancer Center.
There will also be a number of exhibitors offering information. North State Radiology and Medi-Cals Incentives to Quit will be offering discount vouchers for screening and incentives to quit smoking for those people who qualify.
