Mark Duenas has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of his wife Karen in Cottonwood in May 2012.  He will be eligible for parole after the first 25 years.

Duenas was found guilty of murder on November 1, 2013 by a Shasta County Jury after a second trial. His first trial ended after a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial in August. Although the defense claimed there was a substantial lack of physical evidence, the physical and circumstantial evidence presented by the prosecutors proved to be enough to convince a jury in the retrial.

After the judge stated his plan to impose a 25 years to life sentence at the beginning of the hearing, Duenas spoke to the court against the advice of his attorney. Duenas reportedly proclaimed his innocence in a tear-filled plea and said he didn’t do anything wrong. His son also reportedly stated law enforcement officials “botched” the investigation.

Duenas’ Defense Attorney stated he plans to file an immediate appeal today.
