The driver of a semi-truck which rolled and blocked all northbound lanes of I-5 south of Gilman Avenue in Lakehead this morning died at Mercy Hospital this afternoon. The driver was identified as 39-year-old Robert Dale Campbell of Redding. Officers who arrived at the scene of the accident just after 3 a.m. this morning were initially unable to find Campbell in his truck. At approximately 3:25 a.m. a southbound motorist notified CHP officers of a male on the freeway at the Gilman over crossing. Officers contacted the male, who was reportedly acting erratic and making "bizarre statements", and they determined he was the driver of the overturned big rig. Officers attempted to take Campbell into custody until he violently resisted, biting one of the officer in the arm which resulted in minor injuries.

Campbell then reportedly ran from the officers into traffic of I-5. At the Stanton Road under crossing, Campbell jumped over the concrete barrier and fell and estimated 30 feet onto Stanton Road. Officers and emergency medical units immediately responded to render first aid. Campbell was conscious and spoke to officers as he was loaded onto an ambulance. He was later transported to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The accident resulted in I-5 being temporarily closed and constricted traffic for most of the day, but all lanes of I-5 were opened earlier this afternoon.

The Redding Police Department is still investigating this incident.
