The Chico Unified School District is one of 477 school districts in the United States and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 4th Annual AP District Honor Roll. The District is being honored for increasing access to AP course work while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. According to the District’s press release, Chico Unified has increased the number of students participating in AP courses by 18% since 2011.
The release also indicated 70% of the District’s AP students are scoring a 3 (out of 5) or higher on their tests, well above the national average of 57%.
“We applaud the extraordinary efforts of the devoted teachers and the administrators in their district who are offering more students the opportunity to engage in rigorous college-level course work,” said Trevor Packer, College Board’s Senior Vice President of AP and Instruction. “These outcomes are a powerful testament to educators’ belief that a more diverse population of students are ready for the sort of rigor that will prepare them for success in college.”
The Advance Placement program provides students to pursue college-level classes in high school with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement in college, or both. According to College Board, taking AP courses demonstrates to college admission officers that students have sought the most rigorous curriculum available and their research indicates students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success in college than non-AP students.
In order to earn the AP District Honor Roll, Chico Unified had to increase participation and access to AP courses by 11% (between 2011 and 2013), increase or maintain the percentage of exams taken by minorities, and improve performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2013 a 3 or higher to those in 2011. That is unless the district has already attained a performance level more than 70%.
