The Chico Police Department is already spread pretty thin.
But after a very busy weekend, Chico PD is now operating with an even more limited staff.
Five officers were put on administrative leave following Sunday’s officer-involved shooting. As a result, the department will have less people working this weekend.
“If we’re fully staffed for a Friday Saturday night we’ll have 20 officers plus three lieutenants,” said Chico PD Lt. Linda Dye. “This weekend, we’ll be lucky to staff 15 officers.”
The decrease in officers means less time spent on lesser crimes.
“We will run out of officers as we get busy Friday and Saturday night,” Dye said. “The low priority calls will not be responded to and some of the higher priorities will have to wait.”
There is no timetable for the return of those officers on administrative leave. But officials said the department will still be short staffed even when they do return.
