It’s that time of year when prep athletes are gearing up for fall sports.

With that training comes weight lifting, running, nutrition and talks of supplements and steroids.

Several people involved with the Chico High School football program said steroids are not their culture, but that it is a topic they discuss.

“We encourage the kids to eat well, which, believe it or not, is a challenge,” said Chico High School head football coach Jason Alvistur.  “So before we preach supplements to kids were just trying to get a healthy diet.”

But when the level of competition increases, so does the use of supplements, according to one college athlete.

“It’s getting more abundant,” said recording-setting Chico High School quarterback Daniel Robbins who is an incoming Butte College freshman. “Once I got to the college level, for the most part, everyone takes protein; which I think is fine. I really don't think anyone I taking anything illegal.”
